Ironman, a Wanda Sports Holding company, announced today that it has chosen the city of Elsinore, Denmark to host the KMD Ironman 70.3 European Championship on June 18, 2017. It is the first time the Ironman 70.3 European Championship will be held outside Germany.

Located approximately 45km north of Denmark’s capital of Copenhagen, Elsinore (Danish: Helsingør) has hosted an Ironman 70.3 event since 2014 and is best known for its Kronborg Castle, home to Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

“We couldn’t be happier with this announcement. Over the past few years Elsinore has really become a triathlon city at its heart and hosting the 2017 KMD Ironman 70.3 European Championship is a great honour. It will be the biggest event of the summer, not just for Elsinore but for the whole region of Sealand,” said Benedicte Kjær, Mayor of Elsinore.

The KMD Ironman 70.3 European Championship Elsinore will be the premier event of the Ironman 70.3 European Tour with Europe’s best professional athletes and elite age-groupers racing.

The swim course is located near Elsinore’s original ferry terminal. Athletes will then ride the 90.1 km bike course along the north coast and into the countryside. The course is flat and fast, with a mix of city, coast and countryside scenery. The run will conclude the race with the finish line right next to Kronborg.

“Denmark is a true triathlon country, and the setting of the race will be nothing less than spectacular. We are looking forward to seeing some of the world’s best triathletes battle for the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Elsinore,” said Hans-Peter Zurbruegg, Managing Director for Ironman Europe, Middle East & Africa.

The event will award a $75,000 USD professional prize purse and 50 age-group qualifying slots for the 2017 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, which will take place in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA.
