Ironman announced today it is further expanding into Mexico with the addition of the Ironman 70.3 Campeche triathlon. The inaugural event will take place on March 19, 2017, in the historic city of Campeche located in Southeast Mexico on the west side of the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Campeche is a beautiful destination city that we are confident our athletes will love. With ancient Mayan sites, limestone hills, rainforests and the Gulf of Mexico in the back drop – this race will certainly become an athlete favorite,” said Beth Atnip, Director of Global Operations for Ironman. “We are excited to expand our race offerings in this region as we welcome athletes from around the world.”

The Ironman 70.3 Campeche triathlon begins with a 1.9 km, single-loop swim in the protected waters of the Gulf of Mexico. After exiting the water, athletes will head into transition located at the newly constructed Campeche Country Club before heading onto the bike. The 90 km two-loop bike course will take athletes along the Merida Highway and into downtown Campeche. The spectator-friendly 21 km run will be a two-loop course winding along the Campeche Bay before finishing at the Campeche Convention Center XXI.

The historic city of Campeche is one of Mexico’s best kept secrets as it retains a colonial atmosphere, with narrow streets and pastel houses. The city is surrounded by walls that were built during the late 1600s to early 1700s in order to protect the city from Caribbean pirate attacks. The construction of the city walls took approximately 18 years to complete and much of the eight metre high walls still exist today. Campeche was also named to the World Heritage List in 1999 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which recognizes locations that preserve cultural and natural heritage around the world and are of outstanding value to humanity. Many tourists are drawn to the breathtaking archaeological sites scattered throughout the state as well as the city’s beautiful historical center. Museums, handicraft shops, night clubs and restaurants offer a wide range of sightseeing opportunities.

Ironman 70.3 Campeche is one of more than 90 events in the global Ironman 70.3 series. The event will award a $50,000 USD professional prize purse and 40 age-group qualifying slots for the 2017 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, which will take place in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
